1. aBOUT the s.t.a.r. MEET organization:
The S.T.A.R. Meet Organization began with a group of educators who wanted to provide students and parents with an avenue for speech competition that would do the following: 1) provide the speech community with an abundance of information enabling competitors to prepare for competition and continue to develop their public speaking skills in the future, 2) accurate/equitable judging, 3) provide evaluations that are informative and fair, and 4) elevate speech participation in secondary school students in Southern California. The Speech Meet organizers are dedicated to continual growth and improvement to better meet the needs of the speech community. After a speech meet, your comments and ideas are greatly appreciated. We desire to make subtle or large changes annually if it will better meet the needs of the speech community and help students develop.
Your feedback (positive & negative) is an invaluable piece to holding a successful speech meet. Contact information can be found below.

2. How to enter/ or volunteer at the Speech Meet:
Important Dates (Info for each is found below):
December 13 (Last year's date) - School site coach must email list of students by event
(3 students each event/ up to 6 alternates each event. NO MINIMUM)
It is very important to have alternates because those students will be allowed to compete
based upon the number of total participants AND the total in each event.
(120 total participants among the schools participating).
January 17 (Last year's date) - Video/Award Liability forms due to Norco Intermediate:Attention Shem McCullough
(3 students each event/ up to 6 alternates each event)
January 24 (Last year's date) - Feb. 22 Schedule posted on STAR Meet website
February 9 - 12 (Last year's date) - Informative speakers provide site coach with their digital Microsoft Powerpoint presentation.
Make sure the file name is the school's initials and student's first and last name (ARIS-Joe Shmoe)
February 13 (Last year's date) - Site coach emails [email protected] their school's Powerpoint presentations.
February 22 (Last year's date) - STAR Meet 8:30am registration @ Ramirez Intermediate School & event starts at 9:00am
ENTERING THE SPEECH MEET:
1. Each school's speech coach/advisor should contact the Speech Meet Director Shem McCullough by emailing [email protected], a list of students for each of the four events (Famous, Power Point-Informative, Inspirational, and Skit). All CNUSD schools serving 7th and 8th graders, and one private school have been invited to compete. If all schools participate, four students per event are allowed to participate. If less schools participate 6th graders will be invited to compete, and more students can probably compete from each school. It would be wise to have a list of alternates. All students planning on competing must sign up at their school site coordinated by a coach/advisor AND turn in their video release form to their coach/advisor. Coaches/advisors must send the video release/award liability forms to Norco Intermediate School (by January 17) through the intradistrict pony mail system or mail it to (forms can be downloaded from the "DOWNLOAD FORMS" page (/download-forms.html)
Norco Intermediate School: Attn Shem McCullough for STAR Meet
2711 Temescal Ave Norco, CA 92860
(only the top two of each event will have a video taken and placed on the Youtube channel and website
if their delivery meets, or exceeds previous videos of the finalists)
2. Each school must email their list of students (according to their event - 4 guaranteed to compete and 4 alternates) by Date is "TO BE DETERMINED" (recent extension just granted upon requests from school sites). Finalized schedule of the February 22 competition will be emailed and posted on our website the 2nd week of January. Last year, ALL students that turned in their release forms competed!
3. It is advised that each speech coach has tryouts or "polish your speech" sessions using the judge sheets provided on this site. If tryouts are challenging due to the rapid approach of the registration deadline then have the speech competitors present an introduction only (memorized), which would shorten your tryouts, AND not stress out the students. They can be told that their chosen introduction for the tryouts can and should be refined by the time they present on Feb. 22. To print the evaluation/judge sheet documents, go to the "DOWNLOAD FORMS" (/download-forms.html).

The top two speakers of each event will present their speech a second time during the finals, to the entire audience.

video release form (scroll down to see/to print go to "download form" tab above) to the school site coach in order to register to enter the speech meet. It is important for all competitors and audience members to attend the entire event to provide the same conditions for all finalists and to enrich the finalists' experience. If a competitor is not present when named a finalist, then the next student with the highest score will take their place. If a competitor is not present to accept their award, the student with the next highest score will take their place. If there is a tie in the prelimary rounds, the three judges will select one as the place winner.
All winners must be present to accept their award. If winner is not present, the award will be given to the next competitor with the highest score who is present.
AWARDS ARE BELOW AND CONFIRMED. WE ARE LOOKING FOR THREE MORE SPONSORS TO PRESENT MONETARY AWARDS ON
